Pink Ribbon Pilates

It is widely recognised and acknowledged that Pilates is an amazing program to help in the recovery of women post surgery.

The Pink Ribbon Program at Platinum Pilates is a Pilates based program developed to assist breast cancer survivors with their recovery. It has been designed specifically to address the needs and challenges facing everyone recovering from breast cancer related surgery by our Chartered Physiotherapist Ben Doyle and our Pink Ribbon Program Specialist Milena Jaksic Byrne.

Commencing an exercise program as soon as possible post surgery is a key part of recovery and regaining function for women, and for those men affected too.

A build up of scar tissue, protective posturing and the consequences of treatment all mean that day to day movements and activities such as shampooing your hair, putting on your bra or reaching up to a shelf can be more difficult.

Build your strength and mobility back gradually and safely

Recovering from Breast Cancer

Pilates as a Rehab Option

The emotional trauma of recovering from breast cancer surgery is often talked about and acknowledged; however the physical trauma is often neglected and there are very few clear rehabilitation options once surgery is completed.

There are numerous side effects from the surgery and women are often left with consistent pain and swelling as well as significantly reduced range of movement in the shoulder and arm making daily activities difficult and a return to ‘normal life’ very challenging.

Whereas in the past the medical advice was to rest the affected area, recent studies indicate a link between moderate physical exercise and improved quality of life for breast cancer survivors. It is with this in mind that the Pink Ribbon program was developed.

Pre and Post Surgery

It is widely recognised and acknowledged that Pilates is an amazing program to help in the recovery of women post surgery. It can also be an incredibly powerful tool in helping to prepare the body for surgery.

For example if you are scheduled for surgery in future -we can help you to build core strength, improve your posture and get you ready to cope with the physical challenges that treatment can bring on.

Platinum Pink Ribbon Programme

Programme details

Our program consists of a consultation with our Chartered Physiotherapist Ben Doyle to assess your suitability for the program. This is followed by our 4 week group class.

Our qualified instructors will take you through the exercises designed to make every day activities as easy as they used to be.

We will show you how to progressively stretch and strengthen your shoulders, chest and back to regain full range of movement and reduce risk of lymphoedema – a very common and debilitating condition associated with removals of lymph nodes.

We also provide information on exercises you can do yourself at home.

In addition to the purely physical benefits already outlined, Pilates will help to improve your posture, alleviate your pain, reduce stress and enhance your energy levels.

Whether you are recovering from recent surgery or are many years post-surgery it is suitable for you.

There are three different stages to our Pink Ribbon Program and depending on the stage you are at post operatively will dictate which class you will attend.

We recommend all patients that wish to return to Pilates should have a consultation with our clinical director Ben Doyle.
