As we head into the Summer Months at Platinum HQ it seems like we’re all scrambling to find ways to get a little fitter, lose a few pounds and tone up before the bikini season hits us.
That’s right, even the team at Platinum have to work hard to stay on the right track – so we thought we would bring you a little insight into the things that help Platinum Pilates Teachers to stay motivated, healthy & full of life.
First up we have our fabulous Operations Manager, Damy Redmond, to find out his secret to staying in tip top shape.
I always try to increase my training once April comes around, I plan on doing the Dublin City marathon again this year so will starts to run 2 to 3 times per week focusing more on the distance than the time. I do plan to run into work 1 day a week as it’s 10k from my house to Leeson street . Usually find that helps with shifting the winter bulge! I still train in gymnastics once a week and try mix my training up. I’m new to reformer and LOVE it and can actually see differences in my abs and arms already from the few classes I’ve done.
Do you follow any particular diet plan?
Up until March I used to eat meat but thanks to Anne Marie and Annie I’m now a fully fledged vegetarian and love it. Don’t miss meat at all and I’m loving the huge variety of new foods in eating, I was always a fussy eater and would instantly say I didn’t like something without probably never actually tasting it. I’ve opened my nutritional world up to things like avocados, chick peas and quinoa, all of which I used to swear I didn’t like! When I ate meat I would try and avoid white food like bread (I’d literally stand beside the toaster and eat slice after slice as it popped) pizza, pastas and rice and load my dinners with meat and veg. Always found that helped to drop my body fat a little. White food really didn’t agree with me and I’d bloat after eating it. Now with the vegetarian lifestyle I’m eating way more food every day but making better choices. I’ve also dropped 3lbs without any increase in training, just changes to my diet.
I tend to avoid alcohol during the week and limit my treats to the weekend. I’ve a really big sweet tooth and love tea and biscuits so I try and avoid tea during the day. In my eyes you can’t have one without the other so it keeps the bad sugars down during the week!
How do you stay Motivated all the time?
It can be hard some days but you just have to get up and do it! I find I struggle to motivate myself at the start of the week, but these days tend to end up being my most productive! The sense of achievement I get after doing a workout makes it worth while, nothing like an endorphin rush to keep a spring in your step! I’m also pretty vain so if I know I’ve over indulged at the weekend it needs to be shifted so it’s time to hit the gym! My attention span is bad and I hate long workout so like to get in and get it done in 60 minutes of less!
What advice do you have for someone struggling to get started on a health kick?
Stick with it! Once you get through the first week it will become part of your routine. And don’t be so hard on yourself, so what if you fall off the wagon! It happens to us all! Also enjoy your weekend, we work hard Monday to Friday that you need to unwind at the weekend!
Exercise wise, it will never work for you if you don’t enjoy it! If you hate lifting weights, then don’t, if you hate running then don’t! Do what you enjoy and you’ll already be winning! That way it will slot into your lifestyle as a welcome addition and not a chore!
What does a typical day in your life look like.
Everyday is so different, the variety that my job in platinum provides means I never have the same day twice in one week! It changes every day and working with such a big team means I’ve dozens of different things to do!
Wednesday is my favourite day as we train gymnastics that night, a sport I’ve loved and been involved with since I was a child. My gang have all been in the club for longer the 20 years and it makes the workout so much easier when you laugh the whole way through. I’ve a late dinner then and catch up on my latest obsession “Once Upon A Time” it’s my Netflix guilty pleasure and I can’t get enough of it! It’s worth a watch!
I try and be as productive as I can each day! I always cram in as much as possible so I finish the day feeling content!
