Mind Yourself, Take Care – The Value of Self-Care.

It can be quite the challenge to mind ourselves – to find time and space in our busy lives to give our bodies and minds what they need.

We focus so much on our work, on our significant others, on our children, on our pets, on our friends and families – that we can often forget to consider ourselves and what we need.

Taking time to care for ourselves leaves us better placed to face the challenges that life brings with all that we have. It helps us keep our lives in balance and our perspectives in proportion.

Put yourself first every now and again! 

Sometimes we can feel like hamsters on a wheel; running around in circles to keep up with our commitments and responsibilities. We can become overwhelmed very quickly if we don’t take the time to simply look after ourselves. That’s what self-care is – just taking a moment to care for our own needs. And it’s not selfish, it’s not self-indulgent. It’s an investment in your mental and physical well-being. If we are content and happy in ourselves, we are in a better place to give out positive vibes, to do a good job, to be a better friend, partner, brother, sister, mother, father – to be a fully charged version of ourselves rather than a burnt out shadow of our lovely selves. Simply taking time to decompress will help calm the mind and relax the body to give us a clearer perspective on everything.

This time of the year is often a time when self-care is the last thing on our minds. There can be pressure heaped on us in so many ways. This can often be unnecessary pressure that we put on ourselves in our own minds. We demand so much of ourselves, telling ourselves that we have a million things to do before Christmas. That we need to keep up our fitness regime to fit into our party dress or party pants (while eating and drinking more than we do at any other time of year). We need to look A.Mazing when meeting people we only see once a year, we need to buy the best gifts, we need to go out every night of the week to meet old work colleagues, old school friends, cousins, neighbours, clients – the list is endless.

How do we make it to Christmas without going a little bit crazy?

Breathe. Obviously do Pilates! Give yourself the simple gift of time. Stop for a moment to mind yourself. You’ll benefit in so many ways – mentally, physically and emotionally – and you’ll be more effective and productive in your work and in your personal life.

Self-care doesn’t necessarily mean extravagant spa visits and it doesn’t have to cost much. It can be something as simple as taking 20 minutes to close your eyes, focus on your breath and let go of any expectations you have of yourself. Try going for a walk by the sea, watching your favourite movie, doing an at-home face mask, getting into bed super early once a week, going for a run or going to your favourite exercise class (most likely at Platinum Pilates)!

It could be reading a book, it could be meditating – anything that is just for you. Something that helps to replenish your body, mind and soul so that you can continue to be your beautiful self for you and for everyone else in your life. It’s not rocket science but it can make a world of difference to how you feel and to how you function. Our modern world – where we are always connected and always switched on – makes this even more important.

Take some time for you, as often as you can. Set aside time in your schedule for self-care and stick to it. It will positively contribute to your mental, physical and emotional health. You will thank you for it and the people around you will thank you too!
