“Platinum Pilates was part of my life for the last three to four years of my career, I’d say I definitely got another year – at least – out of my career on the back of what Milena and Will did with me, and the versatility they brought to my makeup in making me more supple.”
WHAT. A. DAY. And what a quote from our all-time favourite rugby legend…
What a sunny Sunday morning we had at Dublin’s Herbert Park where we were invited to give a Pilates class at the Gym+Coffee Summer Stretch #makelifericher event.
Exercises, Pilates and a chance to hear Brian O’Driscoll chat all things fitness and Pilates-related – could a Sunday morning get any more dreamy? The aim of the Summer Stretch series of outdoor fitness events is to get us all outdoors, exercising and staying fit and healthy over the Summer months.
OUR 3 FAVOURITE MOMENTS FROM THE DAY:
1. Gym+Coffee head of community, rugby legend, Brian O’Driscoll kicked off the morning with Personal Trainer, Steffan Fusco with a bootcamp-style fitness class for over 400 eager fitness fanatics. We jumped, we lunged, we sweated, but when your favourite rugby star is calling the shots, we can safely say, we gave it our all – it was one of the toughest yet most enjoyable workouts we’ve had this Summer.
2. Next up, fitness legend, Karl Henry interviewed Brian O’Driscoll for his Real Health Podcast (one of our all-time fave Pods). If you didn’t get to hear it, we’ve picked out some of our favourite bits for our online blog, but this one was by FAR the best quote yet. In fact, the quote of the year for us:
On the subject of community and exercise:
“I understand the value of having teammates of having people to share those great moments and you know what sometimes share those disappointing moments. It’s so much easier to exercise with that with company. You know. I don’t know about all of you, but I find it so difficult to go to the gym on my own and go and motivate myself even though I might have a plan for what I want to do and what I want to achieve at such a difficult thing to do to get into that state. Whereas if you get someone to go for a walk with you or you plan to do something with someone if you don’t do it you’re going to let them down. So straight away you’re onto a winner where it gets you outside it gives you a purpose to get doors, and then you get you to know have a little bit of fun you have a conversation and I think just the values of what Gymn+Coffee are about, getting the community together, and getting to have some fun and have a good time is what exercising for me is all about. That’s I always played rugby with a smile on my face because I enjoyed it and I loved it. And now what I try and do my exercises likewise is try and have a good time and you know you’re during your rest sets you know you have a bit of a laugh and then when you know you’re working hard you’re working hard.”
On exercise after leaving professional rugby:
“Platinum Pilates was part of my life for the last three to four years of my career, I’d say I definitely got another year, at least out of my career on the back of what Milena and Will did with me, and the versatility they brought to my makeup in making me more supple.”
On a positive attitude to fitness:
“… surround yourself with positivity surround yourself with a community of health to empower yourself to get healthier and to stay healthy.”
3. One of our Chartered Physiotherapists and Reformer Pilates instructors, Aisling Frawley, took the helm to finish off the morning with a brilliant mat Pilates class to 400 Pilates-loving attendees (Brian O’Driscoll included) who could feel the burn but happily stretched and elongated their muscles after the bootcamp class that morning.
Thanks to our favourite athleisure brand, Gym+Coffee for having us there to share in your brilliant initiative to get communities outdoors exercising, healthy and fit. Until next year….
