At the end of this month on the 30th of July, the Platinum Pilates and PlatinumPhysio team will be lending a helping hand at the “King of Greystones” charity triathlon. This event is organised by a group of family and friends to raise much needed funds for “The Gavin Glynn foundation” in honour of the late Gavin Glynn.
Gavin was diagnosed in 2011 aged 18 months with a rare form of cancer Rhabdomyosarcoma which affects muscles attached to bones. Gavin’s family flew all over Europe and USA, never surrendering hope, in search of the best treatment for their son. He bravely battled for 3 years but sadly passed away on 21st October 2014.
“He always smiled and laughed and brought strength and happiness to us all and everyone who met him.”
Taking positive from a hellish situation, the experience that the Glynn’s endured motivated the family to create “The Gavin Glynn Foundation”.
We know first hand what it is like to have to travel to other countries with your child to receive treatment and we want to take this financial burden and stress away from the families so they can focus all their time on their child and family”.
The Gavin Glynn Foundation
Their mission is to be able to assist families with:
- Transportation (eg. Flights, car hire).
- Transportation to and drop the designated Airports.
- Accommodation within, or close to, the designated medical center.
- Food and living expenses for the duration of the child’s treatment while abroad.
- Travel pack to include toys for the child and siblings travelling.
The burden of having a child diagnosed with a life-threatening illness is enough for any family to carry on its own. Eliminating the worry of building expenses allows the family to focus their energy on the health of their child.
So far, the foundation has helped 15 families. 11 year old Harry is the child that they are currently raising funds for. His story can be read here.
The triathlon event itself consists of a 750m swim, 5km run and 20km cycle and a Try a Tri options with a 200m swim. This is a nice challenge to set yourself whilst contributing to a worthy cause.
We will be down there at the finish line in Burnaby park providing some well-earned massages for participants and cheering on our own Will Byrne who is taking part.
