Sometimes you have to close your eyes and jump.
Over the last couple of years I have spent most of my time working on my dream. That is, to make the big leap from the finance world to a career in the wonderful world of Pilates.
When I haven’t been at work, I’ve been in the library studying the fascinating subject that is the human body. I’ve been in the studio or at home working on my form and technique and focusing on practicing what I now preach. To say it’s been a challenge would be an understatement; but I always had my goal in sight. I was continually motivated by the prospect of working in an industry that I truly believe in.
Swapping Desks For Planks!
Swapping my desk in a busy finance team for the Reformer Pilates studio has been a challenging, scary, rewarding, intimidating, fulfilling, demanding, positive and wonderful experience. I feel that I have learned a lot about myself and I have grown hugely during this transition. Taking the leap after working for 13 years in the finance industry is a massive step and not something I did lightly. Even though I was happy and doing well in my job, it really wasn’t my passion or something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I realised that I was the only person who could change this.
I was coasting along but always felt that I was in the wrong place, my heart wasn’t really in my work. So, I set about enrolling in a course to study for my diploma in Pilates and the hard work began. My days went by in a whirl of Pilates practical work at 6am in the morning, then work, on to the library to study, followed by more Pilates, only to get up and do it all again the next day! I loved every minute.
Hard Work Pays Off.
Once I was qualified, I did some work teaching mat Pilates. I was lucky enough to be accepted on the Internship Programme with Platinum Pilates. This was another huge learning curve where I’ve gained even more knowledge and experience from the best team of mentors. I feel extremely fortunate to be a part of this amazing team.
I love coming to work for so many different reasons. It’s a challenging job but it is so rewarding. I am working completely outside my comfort zone but that’s where life begins, right!! It’s intimidating putting myself out there to teach a class. However, I believe in the Pilates method and I know that I can help each client to develop in how they move and to feel better in themselves. This is what really drives me.
I feel fulfilled at the end of each class because I feel like I’m making a difference. The opportunity to make clients feel stronger in their bodies and minds is a privilege. It’s something I hope I never take for granted. I feel a sense of accomplishment when I see clients leaving a class looking happier and more relaxed than when they walked in. It’s a very positive environment and I feel like I really belong here. Health and wellbeing is so important to me. I believe strongly in living a healthy, balanced life. Teaching Pilates means that I am working with like-minded people to share this with our clients.
It’s also nice to meet people from all walks of life. You never really know who is going to walk into your class and this keeps things interesting! I feel like I am constantly learning about people and the human body; no two bodies are the same. There is so much to learn and even though I’ve studied it in great detail since embarking on this new career, I feel that the potential for expanding my knowledge on the human body and Pilates is never-ending.
Was It Worth It?
Life in the Pilates world is most definitely for me. It’s been a whirlwind so far and I look forward to all the exciting new challenges ahead. There’s never a dull moment and I feel like I’ll always be kept on my toes – and that’s just where I like to be!
